Useful information for your travel to Germany

Planning a trip is not always easy. Whether it's a simple adapter to plug in your phone or laptop or the currency you will need to pay with... Depending on how far you are going to travel, there a lot of things that have to be considered.
To help you a bit with you travel preparations we collected some useful information for your time in Berlin:

Climate and Time Zone

Berlin has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. August is one of the warmest months in Germany but still it can rain all around the year. The average temperature for August in Berlin is about 23°C/73,4°F.

The time zone for Germany is Central European Summer Time (CEST), UTC + 2

Currency

The German currency is the Euro, the same as in 18 other European countries.

Euro banknotes are issued in €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10, €5 notes.
Denominations of Euro coins are €2, €1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, and 1c.

All Euro coins have a common side showing their value, while the national side shows an image chosen by each country.
Euro coins from any member state are valid in all states throughout the Euro zone.
The Euro notes, front and back side, are the same in all countries.

Electricity

You might need to check if you need a power plug adapter or voltage converter for your travel to Berlin.
In Germany the power sockets are of type F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Language

The official language in Germany is German. But don't worry... Berlin is a major tourist destination and a lot of people speak English. For the congress, as an international event, the main language will be English. However, there are is also a German programm section, as the IPOS2017 congress is organized in conjunction with the PSO Annual Meeting. Therefore all PSO related program parts will be held in German.

Visa Requirements

An identity card is sufficient for participants from EU-member countries. All other participants need a valid passport to enter the European Union. Visa may be required for participants from some countries. Germany is a party to the Schengen Agreement, with a Schengen visa you can travel and stay not only in Germany, but all 26 countries that participate in the Schengen Agreement for a period of up to 90 days.
